Jesse Yap, a fourth-year student athlete majoring in industrial engineering and a member of the men’s golf squad, was one of two students recently honored as Big West Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Yap ranks No. 4 in Cal Poly history in career scoring average (73.4 over 42 rounds). The redshirt junior has chalked up three career top-10 finishes, pus five additional top-20 performances. A 2010 graduate of the Anglo-Chinese School, an independent school in Singapore that spans high school and junior college, Yap played golf for six years. He chose to attend Cal Poly because of its "good engineering program and an opportunity to play college golf."
Another Cal Poly awardee, Molly Haar, is a business major and a runner for the school’s cross country and track program.
The two Mustangs’ 2016-17 Big West Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year were honored alongside 16 fellow recipients representing eight peer universities. The honorees were chosen from a total of nearly 2,500 student-athletes throughout the Big West. The award presentation was held March 9 in Garden Grove, Calif.
