Scott Peterson (CSC '97), head of Effects for PDI/DreamWorks, will give an overview of the development process of visual effects on "Megamind," the newest animation blockbuster by DreamWorks.
Peterson notes, "Working on visual effects for a production two years before it releases is full of challenges. On Megamind, the basis of the story was in place from the beginning, but the events and the characters changed dramatically during pre-production."
Peterson has developed many visual effects including explosions and electricity for Megamind, and a massive waterfall for Shrek 4D. He has contributed many systems and techniques to the pdi library of software including apatented geometry compression scheme, a tendril-based fluid simulation technique, a particle clustering pipeline, a foliage pipeline, a foliage canopy lighting technique, and an interactive foliage creation tool.
Peterson's filmography includes Megamind, Madagascar2, Shrek the Third, Shrek 4D, Shrek 2, Shrek, and Antz.
The talk is co-sponsored by the Computer Science Department, Cal Poly Engineering, ACM student club, College of Liberal Arts, WISH student club, and LAES Program.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
