Civil Engineering Student Chapter Wins National Award

May 29, 2015

The Cal Poly Society of Civil Engineers (SCE), the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, is the recipient of the prestigious Robert Ridgway Award, which recognizes the single most outstanding chapter out of 323 student groups in 16 countries. The award was presented May 20.

The national society’s committee on student activities selects the winning college through a rigorous review based on an annual report prepared by student officers. This is the fourth time in seven years that Cal Poly has won the award, including three consecutive years from 2009 to 2011.

“This distinction is the civil engineering equivalent of the Academy Award,” said Dean Debra Larson. “It only goes to the best of the best, and it reflects our Cal Poly chapter’s extraordinary efforts, achievements and leadership.”

Faculty advisors were Garrett Hall and Eric Kasper.

Cal Poly’s 100-page annual report summarized community service and professional activities completed in 2015, including hosting a career fair that attracted 74 civil and environmental engineering companies and 500 attendees. Activities reflected the club’s goals of expanding its interactions with industry and increasing its collaborations with other engineering clubs and universities through events, projects, competitions and community outreach. The Cal Poly Steel Bridge team recently placed second in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, and the chapter’s concrete canoe team will represent the Pacific Southwest region in the Concrete Canoe National Competition in June.

“These achievements go to the roots of Learn by Doing,” said Ryan Smith, chapter president. “We have such a large group — and long history — of devoted student members who invest their time, interest and energies on extracurricular activities like SCE.

“This year, as in the past, the breadth of club activities and opportunities also reflects the support of faculty advisors, department faculty, the support of the college as a whole and the interest and involvement of companies,” he said.
