Tricia Compas-Markman Honored as a Mother of Invention

Cal Poly civil and environmental engineering alumna Tricia Compas-Markman has been honored with a Mother of Invention Award by Toyota for addressing one of the most-pressing issues of disaster relief — getting clean water to victims.
She and two other recipients were presented the award at the fifth annual Women in the World Summit held at New York’s Lincoln Center April 3-5.
Two Cal Poly students showcased their burning idea for an alternative flame retardant at last month’s National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) in Silicon Valley.
Cal Poly civil engineering senior Chao Yang participated in the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), where college students worked to turn ideas into actions.
A multidisciplinary team of Cal Poly engineering students won the western regional UAV competition.

Cal Poly’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter has been awarded the 2014 Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 9 and was named a Robert Ridgway Award Finalist.
The Cal Poly Concrete Canoe Team swept the concrete canoe competition at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Pacific South West Regional Conference held April 2-5 at San Diego State University.
